One Outs follows Toua Tokuchi, a gifted gambler and pitcher who has built a legend by winning 499 straight matchups in One Outs, a ruthless one-on-one duel between a pitcher and a batter. Using nothing but mediocre fastballs and an uncanny ability to read his opponents, Tokuchi treats baseball as a way to make money rather than a sport to cherish.
His path crosses Hiromichi Kojima, the star hitter of the struggling Saikyou Saitama Lycaons. After seeing Tokuchi in action, Kojima becomes convinced that he is exactly what the team needs to escape its slump. Determined to recruit him no matter the cost, Kojima puts his own career on the line and defeats Tokuchi at Tokuchi's own specialty, bringing the gambler into the Lycaons.
Once inside the team, Tokuchi immediately clashes with owner Tsuneo Saikawa, who refuses to pay him a reasonable salary. Tokuchi answers with a special contract: every out he records earns him five million yen, while every run he allows costs him fifty million. With every game threatening his fortune and the team's future, Tokuchi must outthink everyone around him and survive each contest one calculated move at a time.
