Nanbaka turns Japan's most secure prison, Nanba, into a riotously colorful stage where confinement never quite manages to tame the inmates of Cell 13. Built to hold criminals too slippery for ordinary prisons, Nanba becomes the home of four residents with a perfect record of escaping every other cell block they have ever entered. Juugo, a lock specialist who has spent most of his life behind bars; Uno, a gambler guided by uncanny intuition; Nico, an otaku whose body reacts strangely to drugs; and Rock, a brawler who lives for food, spend their days pushing the limits of prison life while testing the patience of the staff.
Keeping watch over them is Hajime Sugoroku, the building supervisor who does everything he can to stop the quartet from breaking out of Nanba. But Nanbaka is less interested in grim confinement than in the absurd routines that define life inside the prison: three square meals a day, sports festivals, and the strange sense of comfort the inmates find in a place that should never feel like home. With fast-paced comedy, bright energy, and an unexpectedly warm look at the bonds formed between prisoners and guards, Nanbaka turns a maximum-security setting into a strangely welcoming world.
