Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai is set at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart, a school where the magical craft of Machinart brings mechanical dolls, known as automatons, to life and trains puppeteers to control them. In this world, nations have turned Machinart into a military asset, giving the discipline both prestige and danger.
At the center of the story is Raishin Akabane, a student who fails the entrance exams and is forced to defeat a top student if he wants to qualify for the Evening Party. That tournament pits puppeteers against one another in direct combat through their automatons, and the winner is awarded the title of Wiseman along with access to forbidden arts. Raishin’s first major test comes when he faces Charlotte Belew and her automaton Sigmund, only to find himself drawn into a wider chain of attacks from other students.
With his humanoid automaton Yaya at his side, Raishin moves through the academy while carrying the burden of a troubled past. As rivals close in and the school’s conflicts escalate, he fights to survive, protect what matters to him, and reach the title reserved for the strongest fighter.
