In Kemonozume, creatures known as Shokujinki have secretly lived alongside humans for hundreds of years. Though they often look human, they can transform into uncontrollable beasts with gigantic claws and consume humans to survive. Opposing them is the equally secretive Kifuuken dojo, a sword school that kills Shokujinki by cutting off their arms and stands as the only barrier against their unchecked domination. Against that hidden war, Toshihiko Momota—the son of the Kifuuken's leader—becomes instantly captivated by a mysterious woman named Yuka Kamitsuki.
Their relationship is complicated from the start, because unbeknownst to them both, Yuka is a Shokujinki and Toshihiko is sworn to kill her. At the same time, the Kifuuken faces a crisis of confidence as Toshihiko's brother Kazuma pushes against tradition and tries to modernize the organization. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa and produced by Madhouse, this 2006 original TV series turns its supernatural conflict into a violent romance shaped by strained emotions and the secrets of both the past and present. As those tensions tighten, the question is not only who will live, but who will be eaten.
