Kämpfer opens with Natsuru Senō waking up transformed into a beautiful girl, only to be told by a stuffed tiger that he has become a Kampfer, a mystical fighter who must battle other Kampfers while in female form. What should have been a normal school life turns into a nonstop scramble to hide his secret, survive the selection process, and make sense of a power that forces him into a body and role he never asked for.
His best childhood friend only makes things harder when she falls for his new female body, turning an already chaotic situation into a tangle of affection, embarrassment, and jealousy. At school, boys and girls are kept in separate sections, so Natsuru is effectively double enrolled and stuck between identities while the rumor mill spins out the absurd claim that he is dating himself. Meanwhile, other Kampfers are also attending the school, and not all of them mean well: some seem ready to take her out on a date, while others may be planning something far more permanent. With swords, guns, hormones, fists, and every other possible complication flying around him, Natsuru has to keep moving if he wants to stay alive. Every encounter threatens to expose his secret further, pushing him deeper into a conflict where schoolyard gossip and magical duels are equally dangerous. In a world where the line between romance and combat keeps collapsing, this reluctant gender-bender defender has no choice but to become a contender—or die.
