Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi unfolds in a world where God has abandoned humanity, leaving behind a cruel order in which the dead do not truly die and no new life can be born. With divine judgment gone, the role of the gravekeepers remains one of the last sacred duties in the world: mysterious beings whose burial rites can finally give the dead proper rest.
Ai is a cheerful, sheltered girl who has inherited her late mother’s position as her village’s gravekeeper, and she carries out that lonely responsibility with quiet devotion. Her fragile routine ends when Hampnie Hambart, a strange man who claims to be her father, arrives and destroys the village by killing everyone there. With her home gone and nowhere else to go, Ai travels with him across a broken land, gradually learning how this world functions and what it means to survive in it.
As Ai helps the living where she can and lays the dead to rest, she is forced to confront the pain of God’s absence, the cruelty left in its place, and the weight of the duty she has inherited. The story follows her search for purpose in a world where death has lost its meaning, and where compassion becomes the last way to honor the departed.
