Hotarubi no Mori e follows a quiet, fragile bond that begins one summer and deepens across the years. During a vacation at her grandfather’s house, six-year-old Hotaru Takegawa becomes lost in a forest rumored to be inhabited by spirits. In her panic, she is found by Gin, a mysterious boy wearing a mask who offers to guide her out.
Their first meeting immediately reveals the rule that governs Gin’s existence: if a human ever touches him, he will disappear forever. Because of that curse, Gin keeps Hotaru at a painful distance even when she reaches out to him in relief. Hotaru, however, cannot forget the kindness behind his guarded behavior, and she returns to the forest despite his warning never to come back.
As the seasons pass, Hotaru and Gin continue meeting in the woods, building a relationship shaped by trust, restraint, and the impossible line between a girl growing up and a spirit who cannot share her world in the same way. Hotarubi no Mori e turns that connection into a delicate story of friendship, longing, and the boundaries destiny places between them.
