Himouto! Umaru-chan centers on Umaru Doma, a brilliant schoolgirl who seems polished and admired in public but becomes an entirely different person the moment she gets home. Out in the world, she keeps her reputation as a model student intact, while at home she pulls on her hamster hoodie, lounges around, and lives on snacks, games, and anime. That split between her public image and private habits drives the comedy, and it leaves her older brother Taihei constantly managing her antics as he tries to keep their household running.
As the story expands, classmates and friends such as Nana Ebina, Kirie Motoba, and Sylphinford Tachibana enter Umaru's daily orbit and add new shades to the franchise's slice-of-life humor. Their presence brings out different sides of Umaru and changes the rhythm of her home and school life, while the series keeps its focus on small arguments, everyday routines, and the warm sibling friction at the heart of the relationship between Umaru and Taihei. The result is a light, playful franchise built on contrast, hidden habits, and the way ordinary moments can become memorable when Umaru refuses to live only one version of herself.
