Hikuidori is a TV historical drama set in Edo, where fire can destroy an entire district in a single night and the people who fight it must be as disciplined as any warrior. At the center of the story is Matsunaga Gengo, a once-renowned fire-fighting samurai known as the "Fire-Eating Bird." After leaving the brigade for reasons of his own, he is invited to serve the struggling Shinjo clan, whose fire unit has almost no money, no staff, and little respect from those around it. With Miyuki's support, Gengo begins the difficult work of rebuilding the group from the ground up, gathering a team of eccentric retainers and shaping them into the Boro-Tobi-Gumi around a single purpose: saving lives when fires break out.
As suspicious "foxfire" incidents spread through Edo, the unit is pulled deeper into a dangerous struggle that tests both their resolve and their skills. Caught between civic duty, loyalty, and the pressure of working with scarce resources, Gengo and his companions must prove that even an overlooked fire brigade can stand between the city and catastrophe.
