Shinsekai yori is set in a far-future world where a small percentage of humans first awakened psychokinetic abilities known as Cantus in 2011, and a millennium later society has been rebuilt around that power. In the quiet town of Kamisu 66, Saki Watanabe is the last of her close friends to awaken her abilities and enter Sage Academy, a school for psychics that hides a strict hierarchy beneath its polished surface. Although every student has Cantus, not everyone is treated equally, and Saki is unsettled when a classmate believed to be weaker than the others suddenly disappears.
On the walk home with Maria Akizuki, Shun Aonuma, Satoru Asahina, and Mamoru Itou, Saki encounters two strange Monster Rats, mole-like beings who worship Cantus users as gods. When she uses her power to help one of them, she receives unexpected gratitude, but also a glimpse of how complicated their relationship with humanity really is. As more disappearances come to light, Saki and her friends begin searching for answers, uncovering the secrets hidden behind Kamisu 66 and the dark history buried beneath this seemingly perfect new world.
