FLCL is a surreal coming-of-age franchise built around ordinary teenagers whose lives are shattered by sudden intrusions of chaos, robots, and the enigmatic Haruko Haruhara. In the original story, Naota Nandaba is a sixth grader in a city where nothing amazing ever seems to happen. With his brother Tasuku away in America playing baseball, Naota is left to watch over the traces Tasuku abandoned behind him, from the top bunk bed in their home to Mamimi Samejima, Tasuku's ex-girlfriend, who still clings to Naota as if she can keep the old life intact.
That fragile routine is broken when Haruko arrives on a Vespa, bass guitar in hand, and turns Naota's world upside down. Their first meeting leaves him with tire tracks on his back and a giant horn sprouting from his head, and Haruko soon forces herself into the Nandabas' home and into his daily life. As strange incidents pile up around them, Naota is dragged away from ordinary childhood concerns and into a chaotic struggle that reaches far beyond his small town, with the fate of Earth and the wider universe hanging in the balance. Across the franchise, that same anarchic energy and emotional pressure recurs in different forms, keeping FLCL anchored in absurdity, music, and uneasy adolescence.
