In Etotama, every 60 years the heavens hold a sacred ritual called ETM12. During this contest, worthy Eto-musume—celestial beings who each represent a different animal—compete for the right to become one of the Eto-shin, the divine members of the Chinese zodiac. Yet the system has remained unchanged for ages: since the first ETM12 two thousand years ago, the original batch of Eto-shin has continued to reign, and no challenger has managed to replace them.
Nyaa-tan, a cat Eto-musume, enters the ongoing ETM12 with one goal: to win a place among the zodiac. Fulfilling that ambition means collecting 12 seals, one from each Eto-shin, through a series of battles fought with Sol/Lull, a form of divine energy created by people's positive emotions. The task is stacked against her from the start. Her power as an Eto-musume falls far below the strength of even a single Eto-shin, so she needs a constant source of energy just to stay in the fight.
That chance arrives when Nyaa-tan meets Takeru Amato, a man who has just transferred to the apartment where she is secretly staying. To her delight, Takeru produces unusually high-quality Sol/Lull, something that sets him apart from most people. As he begins supporting Nyaa-tan's dream, Takeru is drawn into the world of the Eto-shin, meets them himself, and starts to uncover a mysterious past.
