Denki-gai no Honya-san unfolds in an "Electric Town" shopping district, where Umio, a shy teenager, starts a part-time job at the manga shop BOOKS Umanohone. From the outside, the neon-lit neighborhood looks busy and glamorous, but Umio's days are far more modest, built around long shifts, awkward conversations, and the quiet comfort of a workplace that gradually becomes his own social world.
Inside the store, a tight-knit group of coworkers falls into a familiar rhythm of work, jokes, and shared hobbies. They give one another nicknames, spend their weekends indoors, and stand out through the quirks that shape the staff, including Hio, Sommelier, Fugirl, Sensei, Kantoku, and Kameko. With devoted manga fans constantly passing through the shop, even ordinary retail tasks can turn hectic, absurd, or unexpectedly warm. As the relationships around the store settle in, the series finds its charm in the small details of work, friendship, and the odd little community growing inside a manga store, while the extravagant scene just beyond the shop sharpens the contrast between Denki-gai's flashy setting and the modest lives at its center. For Umio, the job is less about glamour than about learning where he belongs.
