Biography
Yorushika is a Japanese music duo formed in 2017, consisting of the composer and lyricist n-buna, formerly a popular Vocaloid producer, and the vocalist suis. The duo is defined by its unique "story-first" approach, where n-buna creates complex narrative arcs and literary themes that suis brings to life with her versatile and emotive vocals. To ensure that listeners focus on the music and the stories being told, the members choose to remain anonymous, rarely appearing in media or showing their faces during live performances.
Their musical style blends alternative rock, indie pop, and jazz-influenced arrangements, often characterized by a sense of "summer," nostalgia, and the transience of life. Their early works, such as the mini-albums "Natsukusa ga Jyama wo Suru" (2017) and "Makeinu ni Encore wa Iranai" (2018), established their signature sound. This culminated in the interconnected concept albums "Dakara Boku wa Ongaku wo Yameta" and "Elma," released in 2019, which tell the tragic story of two characters, Amy and Elma, through letters and music.
Yorushika has gained significant mainstream success, contributing theme songs to various media, including the anime film "A Whisker Away" (Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu) and the series "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End." Their later albums, such as "Plagiarism" (Tousaku) and the EP "Creation" (Sousaku), showcase an evolution toward more meta-narrative and experimental structures, solidifying their reputation as one of the most innovative acts in the modern J-Pop landscape.
